Grexel to build district heating and cooling registry for Hamburg Institut pilot project

Grexel supports Hamburg Institut Research (HIR) as the registry provider for their research project on marketing green district heating. The project builds a regional pilot system of Guarantees of Origin for heating and cooling to try out potential best practices. It is part of the energy transition laboratory IW3 “Integrated Heating Transition Wilhelmsburg” funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi).

“Our project goal is to create recommendations. Ideally this would mean producing scalable and repeatable best practices for the use of Guarantees of Origin for heating and cooling in the era of RED II”, says Dr. Alexandra Purkus, who coordinates the pilot project at HIR.

There seems to be a clear market demand for these processes. HIR has been positively surprised on the willingness of market actors to participate in constructing the pilot scheme. The interest has generated lively discussions in several workshops with stakeholders and IW3 project partners where the rules of the scheme have been drafted.

“We have been happy to have a wide range of stakeholders involved in creating the scheme. Their perceptions have been extremely valuable especially in developing an understanding on for instance how green heating products should be defined and traded in real life”, says Alexandra.

These stakeholder workshops have also provided significant input for the practical solutions made in building the registry for Guarantees of Origin.

“Even though registries are our key area of expertise, it is very exciting to work with something completely new. Our team has been very excited to tackle this challenge.”, says Laura Malinen who leads the project at Grexel.

During the process the HIR team has appreciated the experience of Grexel.

“It is great to work with the experts of Grexel. We feel we benefit hugely from their experience and expertise on the field of GOs.”, says Alexandra.

The project runs from mid-2020 to mid-2024. Further information (in German) can be found here.
