UX development coordinator Joel Kauppi

How much responsibility could you handle alongside your studies? Joel Kauppi leads the user interface development of G-REX – and is just about to finish his master’s degree in industrial engineering and management.

Joel joined the Grexel team as a summer trainee in 2018. After the summer the energy certification trainee-position switched to a part-time job for the next autumn.

“The flexibility and trust Grexel have showed have made it easy to combine work and professional development to my studies”, says Joel.

During his time at Grexel Joel has had several opportunities to develop his professional skills. He has for instance acted as the superuser of AIB HUB, where Guarantees of Origin for electricity are transferred internationally:

“It was very interesting to work and develop my soft skills in an international community! In addition to meeting interesting, likeminded stakeholders from all corners of Europe, I had the opportunity to develop a thorough technical understanding on solution architecture, frontend development, and maintenance management. I also acted as the technical secretary for AIB, which enabled me to understand the technical solutions from several different perspectives”, says Joel.

Working at Grexel has also allowed Joel to develop his WordPress-skills. Leading the development of Grexel’s new website required learning new skills quickly, but it also allowed him to make creative choices on the outlook of the site.

Today Joel leads the UX development at Grexel. Most of his working time is spent on team leadership and building specifications to guide the development work.

“Throughout my time at Grexel I have always enjoyed independent responsibility on getting things done. The projects I was in allowed this since my first day here. It has required me to learn to prioritize and define the best use of my work time for reaching project goals. As I started in a very junior role, I have been privileged to learn from my more senior colleagues. To be honest, also responsibility is a great teacher. It requires you to take ownership of finding the best possible solutions”, concludes Joel.
