Looking ahead: Grexel in 2022

This week, our CEO Markus Klimscheffskij discussed his first months in the role and the road ahead for Grexel in 2022.

Almost half a year has passed since Markus took the reins, returning to Grexel after working for several years in a broader sustainability role. Since his return, Markus has enjoyed being able to focus on a specific area which he finds important: GOs and renewable energy markets. “The broader scope of sustainability is really important, but it’s also really nice to focus and influence a more specific topic close to my heart”, says Markus, who highlights how GO markets are complex enough. He continues by emphasizing the enjoyment of returning to work with the familiar faces at Grexel; experienced colleagues who he already knows and trusts.

Strong sales performance and smooth operations with existing customers made for a successful beginning for Markus, who highlights the vast amount of knowledge to be absorbed as the successor of Grexel founder Marko Lehtovaara. Perhaps one of the challenges is re-entering Grexel operations at the beginning of the rollout of the new G-REX system, which Markus labels a “generational leap” in Grexel technology during a “unique time for the whole company”.

The final weeks of 2021 saw the first official deployment G-REX: a modern, fast, and easy-to-use successor of CMO.Grexel. But what can be expected for 2022? “I expect that we’ll really commit to production”, says Markus. “By the end of the year, we’ll have 80-90% of our business already in G-REX”. This involves the migration of existing Grexel customers and onboarding of new customers, with an efficient support system in place to ensure that the transition is as seamless as possible.

Markus anticipates important market trends which could shape Grexel’s 2022. One of these trends is a continued expansion to new energy carriers, and more countries committing to rolling out GO systems. Markus identifies this as a positive trend in the transition towards reliable disclosure mechanisms for the new energy carriers. In relation with this, the finalization of the CEN standard in 2022 requires flexibility from member states, as to avoid a costly overhaul of existing registries due to new regulations. Finally, Markus identifies the industry importance of EPEX’s pan-European GO Exchange, which is expected to launch this year and marks a significant step in guarantee of origin trading.

In terms of targets, the rollout of G-REX is central to Grexel’s success in 2022. By the middle of the year, Markus expects a steady production environment for existing and new features in G-REX, as well as 10 clients in the new system. By the end of 2022, the target is for 80-90% of Grexel’s clients to be using G-REX.  Aside from the G-REX rollout, Markus emphasizes that launching G-REX is no endpoint to development. Grexel must continue to meet the changing needs of the certificate market by constantly renewing Grexel’s technology roadmap for the years to come.

Markus concludes by setting some ambitious numerical aims for 2022. During the year, he targets an increase of 20% in Grexel’s client number, revenue, and in the amount of issued GOs in our registries. By achieving these goals, Grexel fosters the  growth of the renewable energy market and helps to facilitate a greener economy. Another target is ensuring that Grexel’s own operations remain carbon neutral. Finally, and most importantly, no target would be possible without satisfied employees.

One thing is for sure; 2022 is poised to be an exciting year for Grexel, G-REX and GO markets. By following Grexel’s LinkedIn page, you can keep up to date with exciting and important updates throughout the year to come.
