Successful collaboration: Pronovo and Grexel set a new standard for guarantees of origin for fuels and combustibles

At the beginning of 2025, Pronovo and system provider Grexel successfully introduced the new guarantee of origin system for gaseous and liquid combustibles and fuels. A milestone was thus achieved within a year that is groundbreaking not only for Switzerland, but also throughout Europe.

With the newly introduced system of guarantees of origin for combustibles and fuels, import and production data for renewable gaseous and liquid energy sources is recorded, and guarantees of origin are issued. These certificates guarantee the origin of all renewable fuels and combustibles traded in Switzerland and provide information about the production plant and the energy source used. This not only creates transparency but is also a key pillar of the Swiss Confederation’s net-zero strategy, which aims to make Switzerland CO2-neutral by 2050.

Until now, Pronovo has been the issuing body for guarantees of origin for electricity. With the new guarantee of origin system for gaseous and liquid combustibles and fuels, Pronovo has taken on the role of issuing body for all these energy sources as of the beginning of this year as well. It is the first guarantee of origin system of its kind in Europe that also covers liquid energy sources. At the beginning of January, the first guarantees of origin were issued, which further emphasises the successful implementation of this milestone.

An integral and pioneering system

The system developed by Pronovo and Grexel is a closed and fully integrated system that prevents double counting, makes the ecological added value visible, and enables the processing of federal subsidy and tax instruments. It was developed in view of the legal obligation to record Swiss production and imports of renewable fuels and combustibles by means of guarantees of origin starting on January 1, 2025.

Pronovo and Grexel have done pioneering work with the introduction of this system: For the first time in Europe, a comprehensive solution has been created that covers all aspects of energy data reporting for liquid energy sources, making the system a pioneer in this field.

Success factor: cooperation at eye level

This major project was successfully implemented within a year thanks to transparent and solution-oriented cooperation at eye level in collaboration with the Swiss Federal Office of Energy and the Swiss Federal Office for the Environment. The combination of regulatory know-how, technological expertise and a clear common goal made it possible to quickly identify and overcome obstacles.

With this success, Pronovo and Grexel are proving that innovative solutions are possible through strong partnerships and a clear focus on common goals. Another step towards a more transparent and sustainable energy future has been taken.
