Implementing a Biogas and Hydrogen Guarantee of Origin System for JSC Conexus Baltic Grid

The Latvian Transmission System Operator, JSC Conexus Baltic Grid had a legal requirement to implement a Guarantee of Origin (GO)* system for biogas by the summer of 2023. An ambitious target of Conexus was to connect the registry to the AIB hub as one of the first gas domains within EECS.

Selecting the Right Partner

In early 2023, Conexus initiated a tender process to identify a suitable contractor for this critical project. After evaluation, Grexel emerged as the chosen partner, aligning closely with Conexus’ vision and tender specifications.

Seamless Integration

The project hit a significant milestone by launching smoothly on July 1, 2023, exactly as planned. This success showcases the effective teamwork between Conexus and Grexel and sets a strong example for integrating biogas guarantee systems in the EECS framework.

Empowering Guarantees of Origin Management

JSC Conexus Baltic Grid now benefits from G-REX, a user-friendly and modern electronic registry for guarantees of origin. Connection with the AIB Hub according to the V80 protocol is already prepared, and once Conexus’ domain application is approved, G-REX will seamlessly facilitate the transfer of GOs through the AIB Hub from day 1. This process ensures a smooth and efficient flow of guarantees of origin across the energy landscape.

Compliance with EU Directives

The deployment of the GO registry aligns with the rigorous standards set forth by the European Union, encompassing compliance with the European Energy Certificate System (EECS) and the Directive on Renewable Energy (RED II).

*Guarantees of Origin serve as a pivotal tracking mechanism, providing evidence of electricity origin. This, in turn, enables energy users to consume energy specifically from renewable sources instead of an average generation mix. Such certification and tracking is instrumental in advancing the production and consumption of environmentally friendly electricity, bolstering traceability and fostering increased investments in renewable energy.
